I'd crumple up newspaper, put the hd in a small box with it. then put that small box in a larger box with the peanuts.

well, i'm about to rma a drive and seagate requires you to use 2" of foam rubber placed in a corragated box. they prohibit against using newspaper/peanuts/etc.. maybe they're just making it difficult so the end user ends up not sending it back.. who knows.

newspaper = bad packing material for an HDD. Get a 1 foot by 1 foot box, get some foam and put in about 5 inches of foam, then hdd, then a layer of foam around the hdd. Then fill the box with more foam. I usually just use a box i have received from another hard drive bought at B&M.

is the HD going to the manufacturer or to someone you sold/traded it to? If its an RMA, theyll have specific directions on how they want it shipped back

anyone know where u can get rubber foam cheap (they sell it at walmart type stores?). i have a maxtor retail box with the foam padding, but i dont want to piss off seagate by sending my drive back in a maxtor drive.. they'll probably screw with my replacement one... and just in case i need it to rma my maxtor drive (highly unlikely, 1st time i got a busted drive.. that's what i get for getting a bare drive at frys. :()

Send it in the maxtor box with the padding. For crying out loud, they aren't concerned about the label of the box as they are that you sent it back using best precautions to insure safe travel. The maxtor padding suffices. make sure its in an anti static bag as well.

Sheesh. ;)

Ok, everybody should take notes on this. Here's the proper way to ship HDs.

First ship it to SuperCyrix where he will put the HD through a series of rigerous tests for
3 years. After the HD has been gone through a series of extensive testing and recieved the Cyrix
seal of approval, it will be shipped Priority mail to the original buyer

Man, does everybody just routinely throw away the original boxes for this stuff? I've got more than a few HDD cartons with original packing material. Hell, I have monitor boxes with shipping material for the same reason. Just shove them way in the depths of the attic in a space you never use anyway. What harm does it do to sit there? Who knows, you might actually want to RMA something someday! :Q

In an RMA situation, many drive makers will ship first if you give them a CC number. They don't charge your card unless you fail to return the defective drive. In that case, you can reuse the packing they use to ship your drive. If it's good enough for them, it's good enough for the return trip.

One good shipping method is to put the drive in an anti-static bag and wrap it with with a decent thickiness of bubble wrap (or just use enough anti-static bubble wrap) so that it fits snugly in a reasonably strong corrugated box.

I am lucky enough to have a box that a hard drive was shipped to me in from a manufacturer. It makes it so much better to ship back.
