Ok.

So my sisters computer crashed. I don't know what she did to it.

Luckily I have a spare that I can send her to use in the meantime.

But! How do I ship it with the HSF attached still? She won't know how to
apply the HSF without damaging the CPU..

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

*** possible to epoxy a brace so it wouldn't move?

I really don't want her to try attaching a HSF..

I guess most pcs use the retail heatsinks that don't weigh too much compared to like an aftermarket heatsink. I would remove it and ship it fedex ground or airborne ground. I prefer airborne over everyone.

ok, please dont ask her to put a volcano on. I think the first time I tried it I chipped the CPU... and I've put about a million HSF's in my lifetime =/

How about putting some egg-crate type foam inside the case for shipping with instructions to remove it before she plugs it in. If a screwdriver is required to remove the case cover, don't forget to send that along too if she doesn't have one already.

Obviously, you're in communication, so you can tell her what you're doing before you ship to her. Then tape over the power cord socket with another friendly reminder to remove the foam. (She might not see a note that you just toss in the box until it's too late.)

Also, assuming it's a tower case, ship it lying on its side in a new box that has a shorter height than width and length to minimize the time it spends standing up. Don't ship it in the box the case originally came in, or they're going to be standing it up (and subsequently knocking it over) because it will look like it's supposed to be standing up.

Fsck... the heatsink will probably mash everything up during shipping before she can get a chance to open it up.

It most likely will. I once bought a PII rig off a guy on FS/FT and he sent it with the cpu and hs still attached. It came off the retainer brace and was rattling inside. No damage but it wasn't good. Has happened to me with a PIII rig too, hs was aftermarket but not significantly bigger than a stock one.

Jesus.. You are so freaking paranoid. It's just a damn heatsink. It won't come flying off and crush everything.

Don't make me demonstrate the fury of the heatsink on a Socket 7 board

with a light whack, I can tear the fvcker right off the tabs and proceed to smash it against the board taking off random items and traces as I go.

How is a heatsink going to get whacked sitting inside a case??

Let's just say I packaged all my FS/T items really well if they were going to be in transit over Super Bowl weekend.

Case gets dropped. HS drops with case. HS has a lot of potential energy. Only little prongs that are very easy to snap off hold the HS in place. HS comes off, goes bouncing inside your case, tearing off capacitors and smashing into your video card.

Major PC companies have been shipping computers for years with the heatsink attached. How often do you hear of problems?

Because they are not aftermarket HSes. Aftermarket ones are much bigger and heavier

ive shipped quiet a few comps and never had any trouble with RETAIL hsf's....however when it comes to the bigger and more heavy ones i dont take any chances and will either pack the case with paper or some other non-staticy material, like those blow up bags amazon ships with. you just have to make sure the person on the other end has the common sense to take them out before turning it on :p

As I said before, fill the case tightly with styrofoam peanuts. Sure, it will be a bitch to clean them all out, but if they're packed in there tight nothing is going to come loose, and if it does its not going anywhere.

I've been using UPS to ship systems that I have built for years with no problems. I have lately been using Thermaltake Slim Volcano 10+ heatsinks. They are easy to install, and really fit tight with no movement. I never pack anything inside the case- these units are ready to use out of the box.
