How to share evenly ADSL bandwith

Any time that my boys start playing with their XBox online, my connection speed goes to the floor, I have ADSL with 3.0 dl and 384 up, my setting are as follow:

ADSL modem====Firewall========swith (auto sensing 10/100)======PCS/Xbox

I though that the switch will do the job, but it seems that is not splitting evenly the bandwith. So I'm looking for a cheap solution, so there is no more speed connection problems.

Thanks in advance

Hi,

Off the top of my head I don't know of many SOHO routers that manage bandwidth/port. My only suggestion is that you put together a cheap linux router using an old pc and enable some sort of bandwidth throttling that way. I'm sure there'll be a way to do it. It would however not be a particularly easy task.

Other suggestion is to buy a faster connection ;)

Good luck and sorry I can't help more,

Andy

Who is paying for the broadband? No cost solutions:

1. In a rather loud voice say "I'm working, get off."
2. Pull their Ethernet connection from the switch when you need the bandwidth.

1. get a Linksys WRT54GS router at BestBuy or CircuitCity for $89 after rebate ($100 before)
2. Flash it using Seasoft firmware which you can search for in this networking forum and find more info on. I believe it has always been free, and now the newest versions are officially free.

OR

1. Download astaro.com's ASL OS or Smoothwall.org's Smoothwall OS and burn the image onto a cd

2. find an old computer that you can erase everything from, install two NIC cars (one to connect to the modem for the internet and one for the WAN port of the router), and install one of those OS's on it.

3. learn how to use them and enjoy.

BTW. the fature you are looking for is called by various names such as QoS=quality of service, traffic shaping, and bandwidth throttleing, depending on how you limit or subdivide bandwidth. Both Smoothwall and Astaro provide this.

For you, I would recommend that you start with Smoothwall. Astaro is undoubtedly the better OS, but it has a steeper learning curve, and most of its features will be useless to you. Don;t get me wrong though, as smoothwall is a fantastic OS for homes and small implementations.

Paladin, you are going to the extreme :), I don't have that problem, if I need to use it they will get off (no question asked), but if I can find a solution before doing that, it will be perfect.

BTW I'm paying ;)

I did a search for Seasoft, but I didn't find it, here nor the web, do you have any link?

Thanks

There is also a client-side solution, an application/driver, that goes by the name of "Shunra Nimbus". The 1.0 version was released as a free trial version, but it was later pulled by the company that now sells only higher-end commercial solutions. It's not the most foolproof in terms of security (someone with physical access to the computer could just uninstall it), but it is fairly effective at bandwidth-limiting on the local machine.

Here's a link to a thread on another forum with a list of various applications for doing this:
http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=65793&p=1

Edit: I glossed over the Xbox issue. Obviously client-side limiters will only operate on PCs. For that your best bet is a dedicated hardware device.

I agree that that is a nice option if one is using ICS or just for limiting lets say Kazaa or something, but in this case, the Xbox is the problem...although ICS wouldn;t be a bad idea.

Yes, Goosemaster, the problem rely with the Xbox, so it has to be a hardware solution, like you suggested with Linksys router.
Thanks to Jack and Larry for your suggestions as well,

Best regards

WEll, if you use that software and ICS, yourting the Xbox through your PC, then no, you do not need the Linksys. YOu will need an addittional NIC

I am also interested in allocating bandwidth at the router level to the 2 pcs on my shared adsl connection .

Nobody has mentionned the Draytek Vigor 2900 router which was reviewed here:
http://www.tomsnetworking.com/...s-143-ProdID-2900G.php
and which can limit both the upload and the download bandwidth of each of its 4 ethernet ports.
Does anyone have experience with this router with the latest firmware?
