I brought my pc home for the week and want to be able to use the internet at the same time my brother is using his. We recently got RoadRunner and want to be able to play/surf on two PCs using a Linksys 5-Port hub. We both are using WinXP Professional at the moment.

The connection works for his PC but mine is not receiving any connection. My network connections were previously configured for a college dorm room, but I didn't think it matter b/c I had used the same hub sharing a connection with servers.

Is it different for cable? Do i need to change settings or am i supposed to be ready to go as soon as i plug in my cat5 into the hub?
There are no physical damages to hub, cables, nor NIC...i'm believing it's some settings but I dunno what to use.

Please provide some insight if anyone has experienced with doing this. Thanks!

Your dorm was using dhcp servers to give out IP addresses. Which is why you could just hook up any computer to the hub and get access.

Cable through RoadRunner is different. Unless you get a router your going to have to share the internet connection through your brother's computer.

In other words you will be going through your brother's computer to get out to the internet.

Alright, that makes sense...but now how may i get my current PC to share w/ my bro's RR-ready PC?

Please go into detail as to what I need to do if you may. I do not have a router, but I have a 5-port Linksys hub w/ an uplink port. I am currently pluggin in the cable from the cable modem to the uplink port...then my plug into port # and my bro's into another port.

Plz do provide more info, thanks!!

You have three options:

#1 Buy a router. This is the easiest and usually most logical choice.

#2 Buy another NIC and install it into your brother's computer, this is plugged into hub, his other nic is plugged straight into cable modem. Your computer plugs into hub. Setup ICS on both computers, selecting the appropriate nics as shared, etc. Look for help on ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) either in windows help or online in microsoft knowledgebase for more details.

#3 Keep the setup as is and call roadrunner and tell them you wish to lease an additional IP. If you are only going to be there temporarily and they do not have a minimum on how long to keep charging you then this would be your best bet.

Have fun.
