How to setup wired plus wireless??

I currently have a wired network of two non-communicating desktop computers. One downstairs and one up. The setup is cable:cable modem:hub:each computer via cat-5. I am awaiting a laptop with 802.11g installed. The laptop will be used mostly upstairs. What is the best way to network. 1. The easiest - not caring if they communicated with each other, just the internet. 2. Sophisticated so all machines communicate. Where should I place the router? Do I want an access point or a router? Will they do the same thing?
