You know how a lot of airports and restaurants offer wifi now? I like how their network access is "open," but you're still restricted from accessing the internet unless you have a password, or you're authenticated.

I ran across a home network once that the same kind of set-up. Where the network appeared to be "open" but when you tried to connect to a website, it automatically redirected you to a webpage that asked for the password.

Is this a special kind of router? Or is there some kind of software you can install?

Valet routers do this i believe, as do others

Is there a standardized "term" to look for? I looked at the Valet router, and I think they call it "Guest Access," is that what I should look for when checking the boxes of other routers?

What you're looking for is a "Captive Portal"

There are apps for gateway machines/proxies, and some of the third party router software might do it... I never looked.
