How to setup RG-1100 as a bridge

I already have a SMC Barricade 7004BR for 2 computers, printer and DSL modem, but need to include a laptop and another desktop on a different floor. Instead of wiring these, I would like to either replace the barricade with the wireless version, or purchase the Orinoco RG-1100 kit, which includes an Orinoco Gold USB and Gold PCMIA. Problem is that the Orinoco website doesn't clearly state that the RG-1100 can be used as a bridge, which would plug into the 7004BR. Has anyone done this, or can it be done?

I have an 1100. It's connected to a switchport on my router. I'm using it strictly as a bridge.

You just have to switch it from gateway mode to bridge mode using the supplied management software.

When you get it, jump out to the website and get the latest software before you get it rigged and in production.

Thanks Scott. A friend said that I was using the wrong terminology when I mentioned "bridge". I meant to say access point, whereby the RG-1100 ties into the existing wired network, rather than bridging two wired networks. Is this how you are using the RG-1100?

Your correct. I have seen some Mfg's term their AP's as a bridge. In the 802.11b community, an AP broadcasts to wireless clients (PCMCIA cards, PCI for dekstops, USB clients), and a bridge connects to another bridge, basically extending a wired segment to another wired segment via RF. I suppose, in essence, an Access Point is bridging a wired network to a wireless one but the correct term is Access Point.

I was pretty sure I knew what you meant.

Proper terminology aside, The Orinoco describes its two modes as "Gateway" (Nat/Dhcp server,, POTs connection/dial-on-demad, etc) and "Bridge" (AP mode).

It's been working pretty well, no complaints. I've used it with Orinoco, Cisco, Intel and Linksys PCMCIA ish NICs.

I have mine configured the exact way described in this thread by others. Workin like a champ.

TIP: You can use either the RG management software, or the more robust management utility used for Orinoco's higher-end APs to configure any of the RGs.
You will get access to some more advanced settings goin the AP management route, but the interface is not as "user friendly" (of course).

CAVEAT TO TIP: I did see an instance where I could not configure the RG with the RG management software after configuring with the AP management software.
Orinoco tech support eventually helped me figure it out (an SNMP value was set in such a way that the RG software was denied access).

Thanks all! I will order the RG-1100 kit today. I understand that the range of the Orinoco Gold is better than most wireless cards. Should I turn on the 128 bit encryption or will it affect the range? I need to go through one floor to connect the RG-1100 to the Orinoco USB Gold client. Also, does it decrypt before it sends data to the wired router?

It won't affect range though you will see a throughput performance hit. Maybe even as much as a Mb or even more. Don't have alot of experience with the Orinco product line, and less using WEP on Orinco hardware. Could be less, could be more.

I will tell you a little secret, before I buy a computer component, I look for as many reviews that I can find on the web, I found the process a very good way to reduce the anxiety of the unknown.

And this is the RG-1000 Gateway, i think it is the same Gateway but the 1000 model comes with PCMCIA card.
