My Original Thread at DaLanTech

my buddy has a cable modem and when we lan party it gets boring gaming between the 3 of us. how do i setup or what do i need to buy so we can all join the same game on the internet? we basically wanna play Unreal Tourney and Total Annihilation but all three of us want to connect to one persons machine. with the SMC router i have set up now, the first one to join is the only one allowed in. the rest of us cannot join. i'm guessing it is because the router ip is the only IP the server can see. it cannot see the rest of us behind the firewall. i'm sure this could be explained better than i have buy i'm not a Networking geek.....YET!!!!! if you could break this down to better explain for others please do so!!!

Look at the SMC settings....

My lan group us one IP from a cable modem and then routed throuh win2k server... NAT one to many... And four of us can conntect to one game server...

An easier way is to get more IPs from your ISP and add a small hub between the cable modem and router.... Add the computers to the hub and use the ISP's IP address

I'm not sure that you can, I believe that many game servers (or maybe the games themselves) require that all players have a unique ip addy. I could be wrong though, and if I am someone will correct me.

Couldn't you just have the server connect out? the other two computers wouldn't need to acces the internet, they would only need to acces the server.

One option, Run your own UT Server and connect to it that way and wait for other players.

I don't know about UT but some games and applications utilize multiple ports to identify a client. So one IP could host many many Computers each with its own port dedicated to game information for that paticular computer.

You will need to read up on UT and how it handles its client server interaction and whether this is possible to have differnt connections on differnt ports. If this is possible you will need to configure your router to route the ports to their corrosponding computers and this should solve your problems of connecting to the same server.

what i tried to do was set up my UT "hosting" system on the DMZ or not firewall protected area and have others join. but when one of our lan party joined, it blocked the others on the lan from joining. i might have something set up wrong but who knows, hehe

Are you accessing the UT server via the External or Internal IP?

You need to make sure you are using the internal IP or you will have routing problems created by yourself.

I take it being that you have the UT server on the DMZ you have a dedicated server with its own IP address. You need to use the internal IP when connecting to the UT server from within your network.
