I am setting up a system using an Abit AG8 (specs) pictured here. This MB has 4 headers for SATA drives but only has one IDE (ATA100?) connector which I have connected an optical drive and a ide drive. I would like to add another HD and Optical drive to the system. What do I need to do? PCI ATA controller card? SATA-> IDE converter (such a thing)? thanks for your help.

If you want to stick with the ata solution you will need a PCI ATA controller... if you want to go to sata you should buy a SATAII controller that support s NCQ like the SATAII150 TX4 from promise.. and stick to harddisks that support NCQ as well. this will give you a very big improvement s and onboard controllers do not support NCQ.. or non i have heard off do!

Bought the wrong mobo if you want to use all PATA drives. sorry...

You can get a Promist FastTrak100 TX2 raid IDE controller for around $20 in the FS/FT forums. That's where I got mine, it works great. :)

The reason I am asking about the the ide setup is because I just upgraded my computer and was planning on using what is available to me from the old setup. I will eventually go SATA but for now, I must deal with what I already own. I think a controller is the only way to go....for now. I'll prob. look in FS/FT for the controller and maybe a SATA drive as well (funds pending). Thanks for all your suggestions.
