My biggest concern is to get the internet working... I connect through the ethernet in a college dorm, so basically I let Windows Internet Connection Wizard do it for me... I've been trying for hours to get the internet working on my setup now and it won't work.... What is the proper method to set it up... also some stupid basic questions about Linux, whats the difference between KDE, Gnome, etc. which one should I use? Is there a good site I can read to learn more about my new OS? I've searched, but most the sites I come up are confusing, I see lots of shell commands, hehe... should I buy a Linux for DUmmies or something to that nature book (if so, which ones the best..)? I consider myself a very skilled Windows user, but this Linux stuff has me confused!

Thanks!

http://www.linuxnewbie.org

Try here. It's not going to be easy to learn at first but I think this site does a pretty good job of teaching how to do it.

How did you set up the networking in the install? I had some problems on my new computer before I figured out that my NIC wasn't compatible with Linux. Swapped out NIC's and then all was fine and dandy.

The way that I set it up in Mandrake was to go with the default of DHCP and use the dhcpd daemon to set everything up for me.

If you have any questions about this, I may be able to walk you through this, zap me an email. The linux-newbie.org is an awesome site for learning and helping you not feel stupid when you have a question. The people on the BB are very friendly.

When you installed 7.2, did you select custom and then developer or did you just choose the normal one? I know when I installed 7.0 in the normal my internet didn't work =P Then I installed it in developer because I had to for my OS class and it gave me an option to configure the internet on install...I chose LAN and then checked the DHCP box and linux just automatically configured everything. I'm assuming you use DHCP because you're in a dorm. You just have to make sure the subnet mask is correct. In any case you can try www.linux-mandrake.com I know they have something about connecting to the internet because i was searching for fixes to my problem in 7.0 when i was running in normal. Good luck!
