I have two computers on my home LAN... the server which has windows 2000 professional installed and the client which has windows ME installed. The server can access the client computer and send and receive files to the client computer no problem. The problem is when the client computer tries to access the server computer to print, share files, or anything it will ask for a password..... this is EXACTLY what pops up......

Enter Network Password

You must supply a password to make this connection:

Resource: \\SERVER\IPC$

Password:

blah blah......... well the thing is i never set ANY password on the server computer (or the client computer for that matter). When windows 2000 starts, i dont' even have to log in...... it always logs in as the administrator. anyone know how i can get this to work?

oh and i was reading some of the other posts about sharing files so i guess i should add some of this info also if it matters..... the win2000 comptuer (server) is using FAT32 like the winme computer (client)..... the winme computer is using microsoft family logon and i dont' have to enter any password or username to enter the client computer either.........

btw..... i notice windows 2000 opens folders in explorer a LOT slower than win98 or me.... is there a setting i can change to increase the speed at which the folders open?
the server is a p3 450 /w 256mb ram if that affects speed any......

ok, this is a matter of login. try this. in your winme machine, set it to use microsoft network login. then when you reboot, there will be a login box prompt for user name and password. put in a login name. you don't have to put in a password if you don't want to.

next, go to your win2k machine, and create an account using the SAME login name you just typed in winme. there you have to put in a password. also set the access priorites and stuff.

if both systems are set correctly, the win2k machine can access files on the winme machines, and when the winme machine tries to access files on the win2k machine, it will prompt you for password. use the password you set in win2k, and you should be to access the files you are allowed to.

this is basically the reason for win2k, it's security. that means you have to have an account to login. BTW, the access of files basically depends on the protocol used, which is either TCP/IP or NETBUI in your case, so even if your win2k is using NTFS, there should be no problem.

Also, if you think that it is very troublesome to require password when accessing files from winme machine, and you DO NOT care about security and stuff, you can do this. in your win2k system, go to control pannel, user and password. there you should be able to enable the guest login. by default it is disabled. you can enable it. and after that, you should be able to access files from the winme machine at free will.

BUT KEEP IN MIND that you have DESTROYED the whole purpore of win2k (the NT kernel) security. that means the system is not safe anymore. use that option at your own risk...

Oh don't forget to create directory and file shares on the Win2K machine. Then on the Win98 machine go to Explorer and map it.
