Here is what i need: I want to be able to connect to my windows server 2003 using a vpn to protect the remote desktop session.

The computer connecting is using window xp and remote desktop to connect

1 How do I setup a VPN in windows 2003?
2 Should I use the built in windows vnp or a third party?
3 What do I need to do to the xp box to make this work?
4 What do I need to do to my firewall router to make this work?

I am new to windows server 2003, No domain is being used just workgroup. Oh yeah and this will be over a cable internet connection for both no dial up.

Any help or guides would be greatly appreciated

thanks in advance

Who is John Galt? ;P

Everything you need is built in too both OSs. All the skinny is in the helpfiles too. I would be more helpful but I'm in a rush, sorry.

you need to pass protocol 47 to the IP on TCP port 1723 on the LAN side... not sure if MS routers can do that, I would assume so since its not that difficult.

it does not look like my microsoft nm-700 firewall router supports protocol 47 forwarding,

any recomondation on a wireless router that does? something not to much other 100 cheaper the better this is just for home use.

another question, if i use remote desktop from a windows xp box to my server 2003 box it is unencrpted with out a vpn? is it safe to do it with out a vpn?

There's really no reason to use VPN in the first place. RDP (Terminal Services) is encrypted with a 128bit RSA encryption key already. I only provided the link to setting up the VPN for your own knowledge in case you wanted to know why your doing it instead of following a step by step guide.

What you need to do is just forward TCP port 3389 on your router to the IP address on your server. I don't know how to do this in the Microsoft router but I'm positive it does it and it's probably in the help file or manual for your router. Just look up port forwarding.
