how to setup a simple little two comp network??

I need to setup a network between two computers, one using the realtek network card onboard my GA-7VTXH, to a Toshiba Laptop. Naturally we want to play games but need to set it up NOW because he needs to copy his dissertation (big research project, for a degree) wich was written on his laptop using my CD Burner (its got loads of pictures and databases etc, not going to use 500 floppies 😉 ). Any help very much appreciated!

We both have eithernet ports on the comps, and we got a crossover cable. currently we connected them and tried to search for computers via Network Neighbourhood, and it came up with nothing! I have no idea about networking, and Window's help files were a bit of a joke ([sarcasm] just for a change [/sarcasm]).

I read the anandtech article, but its no help - well, maybe it would make some sense to people who already know what they are doing, but not to me... 🙁

Actually, I find Microsoft's help files pretty nice (on occassion), but this can get complicated for newbies. Basically go into networking prefrences (either right click on network neighborhood, or the networking icon in control panel), make sure there are matching protocols for the network cards. I dont see which OS you two are using so I cant give absolute specifics, but if you want to use tcp/ip you will need an ip address for each nic (try 10.0.0.1 and 10.0.0.2). That should be about everything.

ahh, under his 'primary hetwork logon' theres "client for netware networks" or "windows logon"
with mine, its "client for microsoft networks" or "windows logon".

should i install client for microsoft networks onto his machine?

Yeah. Also, do you see your network cards there in that Window?

we setup "client for microsoft networks" onto his, both are now "client for microsoft networks".

also we have enabled both file and print sharing (on both machines), and renamed both workgroups to "workgroup". we both logged in this time.

in that networking window it shows "realtek..." in mine and "intel PRO..." on his (plus a load of other things, but i think theyre the eithernet cards). this window you get by right clicking on 'network neighbourhood' and selecting properties.

still isnt working, opening Network neighbourhood shows no computers and running 'browse entire network' gives the message "unable to brows the network".

Ok, do you see netbeui or tcp/ip in that properties Window (the one you mentioned)? Im trying to do this by memory, so bear with me. If you see tcp/ip, highlight it, select properties and throw an ip address in there. Then hit ok, ok, ok(?) and reboot both machines (after both of them get ips). Then try it again.

i notice it doesnt show TCP/IP->with his network card beside it? just shows one for dial-up.
i have TCP/IP->Realtek RTL8139/8100 Family PCI Fast Eithernet.

he DOES have IPX/SPX-comapatable Protocol->Intel PRO/100 Network connection, which i dont have for my Realtek.

neither of us has anything saying NetBEUI....

on MY TCP/IP one its selected to obtain an IP address automatically, on HIS laptop, with the IPX thing theres nothing which is obviously an IP address to be shown, but theres a "network address" selection that seems to be "0".

[edit: also we have just gone through "my computer" on both machines and chosen each HDD to be shared with FULL access. (btw, is this going to increase risk of hackers when on the 'net?).

much thanks btw! 🙂

Ok, you will have to add tcp/ip to his machine. Add-->>protocols-->>Microsoft-->>tcp/ip I think. Not sure. But change yours and his from obtain an ip address to specify an ip, and put in similar ips (like 10.0.0.1 and 10.0.0.2).

<< ok, and i should add the IPX one incase i want to LAN with older games?

one sec...

I think Starcraft uses ipx, but I never really bothered installing it. Probably wont hurt though.

<< either way... IT WORKS!!! yay!!

much thanks! wayne+garth stye 'we're not worthy' and all that. cheers!

Gotta learn somewhere, and you seemed to do a little work ahead of time. Congrats, and write it down if you think you may forget it 😉

thanks again... someone should add the link to this in the FAQ, a far more easy to understand step by step for newbies like me 🙂

one weird thing we found is that if either computer is restarted, we both have to go into network neighbourhood's properties again, click on "file and print sharing" and hit ok, then ok again to exit. otherwise network neighbourhood wont show the computers or search the network. seems kind of odd, its not like we have to change a single setting, just click ok in that window.

had a fun quick game of Red Alert 2 already 🙂
