Hello, I need to set up a server in school to connect several computers to the network and i have no clue how to set this up. Can anyone show me how to do this? what programs do i use and what do i have to do. please walk me through this. thanks 🙂

what do you want the server to do? Is there an existing network, and does it connect to the internet? Do you want a mail server, fileserver, or an application server? what operating systems do the computers use?
Those are just a few of the more important questions that need to be answered first, and you may find that a professional's help will be well worth the money.

i guess i just want the server to be able to connect all the pcs onto the internet and they are able to share files and share printers and also be able to protect all the files within that internal network. the existing internet/network is the network provided by the university, i want my server network to connect to that. the computers are running xp.

with that information i hope it could help you in determining what kind of help you can provide me with. 🙂 i am sorry i can't find professional help with this, i need to learn and set it up myself.

what OS do u want for the server?
if you want a linux box, then youll need to read up on the samba howto and ip masquerding howto

You might also consider just using a cheap (linksys) router to share your internet connection. Many have a built in switch that would let you do peer to peer file and print sharing.

Man when they said no one is spending money on IT anymore they were not kidding.

is there another program i can use besides linux?

i want all the workstations to connect to the server/computer and not a router because then i can set up permissions and stuff, stuff that a router can't do.

so where should i start? what programs? and can someone find me some helpful references that i can read about on the net?

thanks

You need a clear picture in mind of what you want the server to do... are you talking about permissions for Internet access? For file sharing? There are many different server categories.

How many computers are you talking about?
How much money do you have to spend?

Do you want all these computers to be able to surf the internet at the same time?

Basically, it sounds like a workgroup (peer to peer network) will suffice.

If you get a real router like Cisco you can set up access lists and permit or deny ip addresses, ports, protocols etc.. Not sure what home routers can do.
Probably do some of it. You can also just enable what files you want to share in the OS.

A late verson of Windows on each computer would suffice.
