How to set Win 95 resolution from DOS?

I have an old 200Mhz computer and an even older VGA monitor that is not able to display anything above 640 x 480. I was using the computer with a better monitor that was able to display 800x600, but I gave that monitor away.

Now I want to use the computer with the VGA monitor, but I can?t change the settings to 640x480 from windows since everything looks scrambled when windows 95 starts.

Can I change this setting from DOS? Is there any other solution? Or the only way out is to temporarily connect the computer with a monitor that will be able to display 800x600 so I will be able to change the resolution from windows?

Boot to Safe Mode.

Go into Control Panel, and set the display settings to standard VGA: 640 x 480, 16 colours.

Then reboot, go back to normal mode and reset the display settings how you want.

When the computer is booting, press F6 (I believe, if not try F8) which will force it into safe mode. Safe mode defaults to 640x480, 8 bit color. You can save that resolution and it should stick for the next time you start it normally.

Edit: Beat me to it by about 10 seconds Andy!!
