How to set up own email & domain name?

I am tired of having to change email address every time I change ISP or ISP changes name (upcoming attbi to cox-internet change coming). I want to have my own email address and domain. I don't care about having my web site.

Please advise, I could go to Dixie Systems. They will register a domain name ($15/year) and then host web site ($20/year). They say this offers 5 email addresses. I then configure Outlook to check these accounts.

As long as I maintain domain name, will I always have same email address? Cab I change hosting companies and keep same email address?

Thanks for your comments/help/suggestions.

As long as you pay the registration fees on your domain name, you keep the addresses forever.

If you change hosting companies, the email address stays the same.

Hosting companies simply point the nameservers to the right servers. When you change hosting companies, its a simple matter just to re-direct nameservers to the new location of your website.

You could just get an "enhanced" Yahoo, Hotmail, email.com, or other account for $20 or $30 per year. It would save a bit of hassle.

Just keep the domain with some space for hosting, heck, you don't even need a site on the space. I use dixiesys and run a couple sites.

Thanks for the replys.

I thought about the hotmail or other premium email service, but you are still in their hands. They could sell out or close down or raise rates to an extreme and you are stuck. I used an email from iname for a long time. They promised me a free email address for life when I signed up. It turns out out that "for life" in internet time is about 3.5 years; then they wanted to charge me:.)

no....I"d go with your own. That way you can set up multiple accounts and aliases. The way the aliases work is that they should allow you to set up as many as you want really, then when someone sends an email to that alias it gets forwarded to the real account. So you could set up a spam alias for ex if you needed an adress for something temporary. When you're done, delete the alias, no more spam comming from it. It's "very" useful.
