how to set up nics in debian?

just trying to set up a simple dhcp server (and then routing if i can acomplish that...). on boot up, i was able to get both network cards installed. i had to reinstall cause i botched something up, but in the process, i got to test the 2nd nic.. both could be used during the installation.

now, when i do a ifconfig, i don't see eth1. but i do ifconfig -a i will see it. i figured because it wasn't in use. here's the problem tho, reading thru the dhcp how to, i do "route add.... dev eth1" and i get no device error. i install linuxconf and "enabled" the second nic and it also gives me an error about the device not being there.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,
Linh
