So I wanna set up my own personal email account (ie: not hotmail or yahoo) like Zephyranthes@Zephyranthes.com
How do I go about setting that up? I figure that I need to register my own domain and whatnot. Can anyone help a newb out?

godaddy.com for the domain
ripplehost or some other uber cheap host for the domain and email

I suggest namecheap for the domain and then send a PM to RossMAN and he'll give you a free hosting account :)

John,

Answer your $#@! AIM!

1) Register a domain (such as Zephyranthes.com) through NameCheap.com which is an affordable and credible domain registrar. You can also use GoDaddy.com

2) You'll need a web host provider. RippleHost.com for $9.99/yr offers 200MB disk space and 4GB per month bandwidth. This comes with email, webmail and web hosting. So you can host pictures, videos, HTML, forums, etc. on your web site. You'll also get up to 10 email addresses.

After you register your domain and sign up for web hosting, your email address will never change again. It's also cool to have up to 200MB email storage and your own webmail access.

Good luck!
