There should be software included with both a Linux distribution as well as NT Server.

I imagine they have the word MAIL in it. For sure Linux has one, not sure exactly what it's called though..

With most Linux distros it will either be Sendmail or Postfix.

There is a free mail server for NT called Mercury/32 . We used it for quite a while until I decided to run Exchange Server (costs out the arse though).

to set up a mail server, you need 2 things
1) mail server program (pop3 and smtp damon)
2) a dns server that forwards mx records to the proper mail server, and also sends mail out.
with those 2 things, ull have a functional mail server. If its internal mail however, i suggest ms exchange or something of that nature.
