Here is my problem, I recently got a laptop for college, leaving in 14 days. Now, I'm using it mostly in my room, it has the integrated 1000 Base-T LAN in the back, and I want to xfer my files from my computer to my laptop. They are both in the same room. In the basement, we have a 5 port Hub, running 4 computers off of it, the problem is, the 5th port is non-functional. I went to radio shack to get a 10 base-t ethernet splitter, hooked it up to my laptop and desktop, and nothing happened. It froze my laptop the second i plugged it in. It has 3 ports on it, 2 labeled PC (obviously for the PC) and one for the hub. many configurations, nothing worked. it wouldn't even recognize on my desktop that a cable was plugged in. Disconnected the RadioShack hub, and it works fine on both computers, separately.

What's the easiest way I can connect both my desktop and my laptop without going and buying a completely new hub with more ports for the basement?

replace the hub, or add another hub via an uplink or crossover cable.

Take the splitter back to Radio Shack and buy a X-over cable. There is no reason to get another hub unless you just have one handy or can borrow one without having to buy anything.

aka crossover cable. Don't even go through the hub. Just direct connect.
