how to set up a simple ppp server on linux desktop

I've got a laptop with a modem, and linux desktop with a modem (not winmodem) -- does anyone have tips on how to set up a basic ppp server on the desktop so I can call it with my laptop, and access my local network? Would it be easier under windows?

Any tips, or pointers to resources would be appreciated, thanks!

from what i know you can network with 56k modems wiht out having to go throu a phone netwokr!

No, I actually want to call. I.e. when I'm traveling or away from the desktop.

Check out the PPP-HOWTO, I'm not sure if it covers setting up a PPP server but it's worth a look.
