How to set up a proxy server?

I am a college student, and I want to setup a socks proxy(i think) here at home, for use while I am at school. A socks proxy is used to run programs that connect to the internet, correct?

I have no idea where to begin. I am on a windows 2000 pro machine.

A proxy server basically accepts connections from client machines, and forwards them to whatever they are trying to connect to. Both the client and the server see themselves as connected to the proxy, which acts as a middle man. They are typically used to impose connection restrictions, log web requests, etc. If you want a free one to play with Google ccproxy.

I can't get this working. Not sure if it is because I am trying from another computer on the same network.

I am not sure what IP address the proxy is using, or if my router may be blocking it.

The server program gives me the choice to auto-detect the IP, or it gives me a list of ips, and the only one on the list is my router, 192.168.1.1 Not sure if it is trying to use that?

I am lost lol

also, is there a good remote desktop connection program out there that will install on a windows 2000 pro computer that I want to access on an XP computer?
