How to set up a LAN at home

But I can't seem to figure it out. I've cruised all the boards, instructables, lifehacker ect
And I am still in the dark.

This is what I am trying to do:
I have a desktop pc, and a macbook.
I want the desktop and macbook to have 100% access to each other both ways.
The desktop has 5 drives. well 4, and one is partitioned.
Right now i can plug in the local ip of the desktop into my macbook and get all those drives but i have yet to get access to the macbook from the desktop. I really need it to automatic, i log on to my wireless and boom theres the other drives.

I've got big plans for the desktop (utorrent, rsync, an ssh server...) but first i need this to work and it should be really simple but its not happening for me.

thanks in advance for all the help!!

dsl to dlink wbr 1310 router. desktop is wired, macbook is wireless.
does that answer your question?

and in the next day or so im going to buy a new linksys and install dd-wrt, i dont know if that will make life easier or not, but it looks pretty useful.

great!
but i have os x 10.5 so it wasnt exactly the same but i got the picture.
i got it to sort of work, but the main problem is after a restart or i leave the wan and return i have to do the whole process over on both machines.
i was thinking about scripting it but the other problem is the local ips change if i power cycle my router (which i do allot cause it dosnt play nice)

i know this is possible because i have been to other peoples lans and you just log on wirelessly and boom theres the shared drives, and if you want some more permissions... tap tap tap and there now you can see another folder or drive.

on the mac and pc i dont have the option of giving each certain permissions and then a separate permissions set for unknown users or block unknown users all together.
i cant find away of sharing my own data w me and myself and still letting friends use my network without them also having access.

Puttting a side the MAC, successful Sharing with Windows OS' involves some general consideration in Network settings, http://www.ezlan.net/sharing.html

As well as specific adjustment of each computer according to what it is allowed to be shared.
