I'm trying to get better 2.4 & 5G range in a bedroom where i'm noticing a big drop off advertised speeds. When i'm near my main router, i get much better speeds.

Plan: Fios 200 Home Internet
Setup: Main Router: Verizon G1100 from 2016
Spare Router: Asus RT-N56U (very old, from 2012ish, but has 5g and rated "WORLD FASTEST ROUTER" by SmallNetBuilder, 2011 ;) ) https://www.newegg.com/asus-rt-n56u-ieee-802-11a-b-g-n/p/N82E16833320062

How do i use this Spare Router to set up as a "wifi extender" or "Wifi repeater" to get better signal from my existing 2.4 & 5ghz SSID's?

It should be easy to do if your older router supports it. Just get into the web interface of your old router and there should be a page where you set the operation mode (wireless router, repeater, access point...etc). Select repeater mode and it should be able to see your other wifi signals after it scans for them. It will just repeat them. Place it wisely.

It sounds like you will need a custom firmware like tomato or dd-wrt in order to be able to do this. If this is the case, it is little more involved. The original software may not support it. If you decide to do it, do it carefully so that you don't brick your router.

That router might be one that will take 3rd-party firmware like DD-WRT or Tomato, or at the very least, MerlinWRT, which is an off-shoot of AsusWRT (the factory firmware).

hmm... i just changed my main wifi router from the Verizon G1100 to the TPLink Ax1500 (wifi 6). Is it simple to set up the Verizon G1100 as a repeater (aka range extender?)
sorry @VirtualLarry since you've heard this multiple times already, you can disregard. i'm pretty crappy with networking and looking to learn since i'll be moving from an "easy" 2br 1000sqft apt to a 3 story house soon (in the boonies)

You can't set the G1100 up as a repeater / range-extender, wirelessly. You can set it up as an additional AP, when using a wired back-haul, either ethernet, or Moca LAN.

Verizon does sell a "Network extender" to complement the G1100.
