Ok guys, need some help here. I have a user that has a weird request (and he's the CEO, otherwise I wouldn't be bothering.) When he opens up windows explorer, he wants it to defualt to his U:\ instead of 'My Documents.' Is there an option or a registry hack to set the default folder when opening explorer??

a "quick and dirty" way would be to tweak his shortcut to open U:\ i.e.: explorer.exe u:\ and just tell him to use that icon. i'm sure there's a better way, but that might tide him over until the better way is found.

This is how I did it im WinME, should be pretty much the same I guess for 98SE and NT:

Wherever you have a shortcut to Windows Explorer, right-click on it and pick properties.

A box should pop up titled Windows Explorer Properties

There are two Tabs at the top, General and Shortcut, it should open on shortcut.
What you want to do is modify the target line with the below options.

If you want it to start on a particular drive:
C:\WINDOWS\EXPLORER.EXE /n,/e,C:\ for C:\ drive
or D:\ E:\ etc.

If you want it to start on My Computer.
C:\WINDOWS\EXPLORER.EXE /n,/e,

Have you tried getting this to work in Windows 2000? It gives error concerning the "/n /e" and reads that it cannot find the specified path even though the explorer path %systemroot%\explorer.exe or C:\winnt\explorer.exe are in quotations. Oh well. It will accept a drive letter but it doesn't "explore", it just acts as though you browsed from My Computer.

For 2000 it should be like so:

%SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /n, /e, c:\

My 2k box is down right now so I can't check it though.

Note the spaces between each switch.

Good tip. It works, and I've been trying to figure that one out for a while. Thanks.

good stuff. it works and I'm pleased because I have a friend who wants to destroy Win2k because it defaults to opening to "My Documents". Drives him batty. Again, thanks!! The spaces between the switches were my problem.

You don't need switches to change the My Documents opening first in W2K Explorer. Just right-click on the My Documents folder and change the target folder.

Rob, that changes the location of My Documents. He's not trying to find other My Documents folders and I'm not going to tell windows that the C:\winnt is My Documents because it isn't.

Try it and watch the slew of messages requesting to move all the documents. The problem has nothing to do with My Documents, just the fact that Explorer defaulted to looking at it. That's all.
