How to send a fax with a cable modem?

To start no I do not have a a regular phone/fax modem only a cable modem/NIC is there a way to send a fax using a cable modem...

No. Your cable modem in no way acts like a fax modem, in fact the word modem is only used in the name so people would 'understand' what it is. What your looking for is internet faxing, there are plenty of services (like eFax) that do this. But they all require someone, somewhere, to pick up a good old POTS line and dial out to the receipient fax machine. Someone has to wind up paying for that, and generally speaking thats gonna be you.

If this is a one-time need, kinkos and some office-supply chains will fax for a fee.

If it's an ongoing need, buy a modem (external or card) and use it just for faxing.

Like Bill says, running fax servers cost money so people like eFax charge you to use them. There are (were?) some scattered free fax servers as of last year (search archived "fax free" here and Off-Topic) but they were volunteer so (a) only in some cities (b) not likely to remain avaialble as the volunteers move or decide to stop spending money to give away faxing.

Ok, thanks it's probably more on a temporary thing....I'm currently unemployed and most places require I fax them my resume.

Kinko's charges $1 a page to fax....I'll check the Sale / trade forum thanks guys....

Any freeware programs that will fax from Word for me? I can't find my XP disk in my house and want to fax from word (changing printer to the fax and send out the modem)

you'll need a fax/modem that uses POTS.
