Hi,

I need the Linksys WRT150N router to acquire a new IP address from my ISP at 2AM and 8AM everyday. I would like this to happen automatically at the scheduled times. What is the easiest and best way to do this? I am using a Windows Vista Home Premium PC.

What I am looking for is something like: ***********************************************************************
START "" "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.exe" http://admin:admin@192.168.1.1/hwhtml/status/st_ppp_connect.html?ImServices.rfc1483-0.1

START "" "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.exe" http://admin:admin@192.168.1.1/hwhtml/status/st_ppp_discon.html?ImServices.rfc1483-0.1

***********************************************************************
The above two commands are for a Huawei MT880 ADSL Modem. The first command forces PPPoE dialing and the second one forces a disconnection. I am looking for something similar for the Linksys WRT150N router.

I would appreciate if someone could help me out. PLEASE

Thanks,
Srikanth Koka

I have never used a WRT150N, but there might be a setting inside the router's firmware to let you tell it to reboot the whole router or just restart the PPPoE connection at different times of the day.

Buy an outlet timer. Plug the Router's power supply into it. Set the timer to switch off the Router for 2 minl. at 8AM, and 2AM.

Do not know prices and ISP PPPOE in india, here in the USA timers like this cost about $20, and switching a Router for 2 minutes on DSL PPPOE usually results in new IP,

Why you need to do so is a Mystery.

I looked into the router settings and I couldn't find any such option.

An outlet timer seems to be the only option. It costs around $20 in India too.

OK, I thought I will spare you the details. I will reveal the "mystery" behind the requirement.

Here in India the major ISP is the government run BSNL. There are a few other private ISPs in India but they either lack the nationwide coverage or their service is way far behind BSNL. My ISP offers unlimited download/upload plan at 256kbps and other plans at higher speeds up to 2mbps speed but they are all metered. They offer unmetered service during 2 AM and 8 AM (they call it night-unlimited). Unfortunately, being a government run organization they do not care to invest in sophisticated tools. They currently do not have a way of measuring the data transfer during the "happy hours". So their way of calculating it is going by session time. If I start my internet connection at 1 AM and stop at 11 AM and download 1000MB between 2AM and 8AM they do not know that. Therefore they prorate it by dividing the total data transfer by the connection time and discount for the happy hours. Hence, they would consider that I downloaded 100 MB per hour and charge me for 400 MB even though I downloaded all the 1000 MB during the happy hours.

The only way to avoid these charges is to renew IP address at the start and end of the happy hours.

Yes indeed. I wish the government unbundles the last mile copper. That should bring down the entry cost for private ISP in India and also bring in competition. At present it is a near monopoly.

India doesn't have to look anywhere but within to see how competition works. It costs only to about 2 cents to make a cell phone call nationwide today, while it used to cost about a $1 per minute just a few years ago.

I found a solution to my problem. Just in case some else is looking for a similar solution in future here's what I did:

I have installed the DD-WRT firmware v24 on the Linksys WRT150N router. It has the ability to run cron jobs. I had set up cron jobs to reboot the router at the required times.

BTW, it is a great firmware.

Thanks to all for your help.
