How to run your own email/domain?

I'm really tired of switching over everything between email's if I switch ISPs. I guess minor webhosting is a plus but I don't plan to do much... just email overall. I've never really done this before so I'm kind of a newb. I know I need to purchase a domain name and some hosting, what is the best options for pretty cheap service, but reliable since all I really want to use it for is email. Also are there server side spam filtering programs out there that I can use? With thoose programs can you see what was blocked to make sure it's not blocking any valid emails? Thanks in advance for any responses.

Oh ya I'm also trying to see if there are any better hosting companies for my g/f... she is currently using impacthosting.com and their like $10 a month, she would like to keep all the features they offer. I'm just seeing if there are any companies that offer a little better pricing.

The more the better :) I've never done this before and am really curious about doing this, I'm sick and tired of switching emails. Heck right now I'm paying earthlink $10 a month for their limited access, JUST so I don't lose the emails I had sending to that address.

You'll first start buy getting a host, such as ripplehost, and the getting a domain, such as www.your-website.com

Then all it takes is a little bit of setting up and then all you have to do is www.your-website.com/webmail and you're up and running. :)

That's exactly what I'm looking for.... so RossMAN helllppp :p

I've set up enterprise email servers within an organization, yet I haven't done one for myself at a remote site. I would be interested in such a siscourse as well.

And while I am looking for something economical to an extent... I want reliability more then anything. From what I've been seeing Ripplehost is economical but not the best reliability especially when it comes to email... and reliability is important to me.

Rossman needs to start his own website. You know, one of the Tom's Hardware magnitude. ;)

I got one setup in about 5 minutes using 1and1. Takes 3 hours for them to do the email setup but my end was simple enough.

Get a Ripplehost account, buy a domain, and you are good to go.

Ripplehost is currently offering:
Double Everything Special

200mb disk space
4000mb bandwidth
PHP
MySQL
Perl
SSI
Cpanel
$9.99/year!

I don't believe Rossman registered a 1and1 account. I did, and I don't use it.

For email, all you really have to do is to get a domain from godaddy.com and use their free email forwarding function.

Then forward the emails to your ISP-of-the-month account or any of the free web-based email accounts.

Simple and cheap.

is email forwarding likely to remain free with domain registration, or will an extra charge eventually emerge? is free email forwarding given with most domain sellers?

If you just want a nice and simple email setup that doesn't require a lot of time or work, I would suggest GoDaddy.

Domain Name - $7.95 / year
Email Hosting - $9.95 / year

Now you have email no matter if you change ISPs.

Sorry guys I gotta sleep sometime :) Just woke up.

minendo pretty much nailed it.

1) Register a domain with one of these trusted domain registrars GoDaddy.com or NameCheap.com

2) Here's the tricky part, choosing an affordable web host. Here are a few choices:
  • RippleHost.com for $9.99/yr offers the best value, good uptime but no tech support (other than their forums).
You get 200MB disk space for your web site and email, 4GB per month bandwidth, 10 email accounts and cPanel control panel.
  • e-rice.net for $14.99/yr or $24.99/yr uses Ensim control panel.
  • HostPC.com for $25/yr is the 2nd best value since you get tech support.
250MB disk space, 6GB bandwidth, 3 addon domains (you can host a total of up to 4 domains with this one account) and DirectAdmin control panel.
  • SolidInternet.com for $29.95 is operated by it's parent company Myacen.com which is highly regarded.
250MB disk space, 5GB bandwidth, email, FTP, webmail but NO Perl/CGI support
  • If you or your g/f don't mind paying $4/mo than you are paying now I can hook you up with the ultimate account.
For $13.99/mo you get a RESELLERS account with 2.5GB/25GB which means you can host several domains, you do not have to "resell" them. They can be your domains, your friends and family. The server specs are Dual XEON, 2GB RAM, 2x36GB SCSI hard drives, located at the CyberWurx data center. Reliability lately has been near 100.00% uptime. Comes with WHM (webhost manager) and cPanel for each of your domains. I have one of these accounts and offer basic email/web hosting to 3 co-workers for $5/mo. That nets me $15/mo - $13.99/mo my costs = FREE web hosting :) You use the other unused resources for your web sites.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask. If you just need a basic web site with e-mail I would go with RippleHost for $9.99/yr.

If you know a few people who could use web hosting for about $5/mo then go with the $13.99/mo resellers account.

I second this suggestion... Godaddy is no doubt professional and reliable. Its your best bet for reliability by far, and if you only need email, its also the simplest of all your options.
