How to run a web server behind a firewall? Is it possible?

I live on a university campus and run two computers connected to an ethernet port. I want to be able to do file sharing and also experiment with running a small web server. I've been running into difficulties doing this b/c the college has a firewall setup for security reasons.

Question: Am I screwed? Should I just wait until I'm out of the dorms before I start doing this, OR (what I'm more interested in) is there a way to offer these services while still behind a firewall?

Any ideas or thoughts?

The firewall is there to stop or specifically limit what kinds of inbound connections and to which machine (ip address)

I think you're SOL. Now you can run a web server on your box and people in your dorm could access pages but nobody on the public internet.

Run your webserver. Don't worry about who can see it and who can't. Tell your dorm friends to hit it.

Yea...I took advantage of my schools telnet services several years ago...ONCE. My account got banned, the service was shut down for everyone, and I had to appologize to get my account back up. Unless you have your schools permission, I wouldn't attempt to host a server on their system, unless you like going without internet access. I wouldn't think they would mind you setting up file sharing from your computer to others on campus (if possible) as long as you weren't using lots of bandwidth frequently. Zip drives and CD recorders are made for this type file swapping though.

Jamey has a good point. Are you violating the terms of your Acceptable Use Agreement? Check your records...
