Hi guys,

I'm trying to play xcom. It worked last year on my Viewsonic 19" CRT (1024x768). It died, so now I have Viewsonic 19" LCD (1280x1024). Whenever I load the game, the top portion gets cut off, so I have to guess where certain buttons are.

If I change the desktop res to 1024x768 it works - why is that?

you probably have to change some scaling setting on your lcd. probably on your monitor OSD panel.

640x480 and 1024x768 are 4:3 resolutions. 1280x1024 is a 5:4 resolution. Try a normal resolution, like 1280x960. My guess is that the game does not properly support 5:4 resolutions.

Or, also just as likely, you need to use the buttons on the monitor to slide the screen around or squash it down to the proper size. I had to do that a lot with my old CRTs.

Thanks for the comments everyone. I tried dguy's suggestion and tried a "normal" resolution and it worked. I still don't understand why that is though. I would think a lower res 4:3 would "fit in" higher res 5:4 (4<5 and 3<4), but I guess that's not how it works. I guess it's the same reason why 16:9 movies are cut off on normal tvs.
