I am looking at buying this Video card and I am wondering if right out of box can I run 3 monitors at once? Maybe using the HDMI and the two DVI ports?

I have a i7 930 with 6GB of ram so I know my computer can handle it.

My roommate says something about using something called an active port and he says it needs to be powered? Does anyone know what he is talking about?

He's talking about Displayport. And at this time, you need to have one monitor that either has a Displayport hookup, or use an ACTIVE adapter that will turn DP into DVI. (There is one 5770 part out there that doesn't require the use of Displayport, but I believe it is both weaker and comes at a price premium.)

I strongly encourage you to do a bit more research though. The 5830 is basically an awful card for the money and there's potential that within a week there will be a card from the new 68XX series that will trounce the 5830 at a minor premium.

Or we might see prices on the 5850 come down, which would also be a better option than the 5830.

Heck, depending on what you want to do a 5770 can handle three monitors (you'll always need to utilize the DP connector for eyefinity) and even handle a couple games (with limited use of image quality effects).

Hope this helps.
