How to restore function to "Get Mail" button ?

The "Get Mail" button has suddenly lost it's function.

Suddenly, only way to request new mail is to click the down-arrow just right of the button and select "Get all new messages."

Does anyone know how to restore function to the "Get Mail" button ?

What I've tried, unsuccessfully:
Uninstalled Thunderbird, downloaded fresh copy, & installed that.
Problem remains.
