How to resolve missing package that was shipped internationally?

I've never had this happened before but apparently a package has been shipped internationally and is now missing. It was shipped USPS Global Priority to Canada. I was told delivery confirmation cannot be used as a means to track an item shipped globally. And that the only way to track it was by the serial # on the USPS Global Priority box that I used to ship the item in. I still have that # printed on my receipt and I will goto the post office tomorrow to talk to them. Should I expect them to even find it?

How long ago? I'd bet too that it's stuck in customs. If you didn't fill out the custom form correctly or it's randomly selected for a tough inspection, that can slow things down. If it's been a very long time then it might be lost, and unfortunately global priority does not carry insurance coveage unless you bought one third party.

I've had packages going to Canada take as long as five weeks before they got to the recipient.

the package was only worth $40 and shipping was already $10. I didn't feel a net gain of $30 was worth it for me to get insurance (i know i know. after sending so many packages through USPS, i had confidence in our govt.). it was shipped via USPS Global Priority which guarantees 5-7 days. it's been around 3 weeks now.

If this bit of knowledge helps: there's a strike at the border on the Canadian side... something to do with customs. I really didn't care other than to realize that there are long delays at the bridges. (I'm in Western NY)

I believe the Canadian gov't proposed a new contract or something yesterday, but that they were still striking last night.

$100 insurance would have been $0.50

Seems like a decent payback.

is the 5-7 days transit time guaranteed or just an average?

I ask this b/c a lot of people misunderstand the priority mail (2-3 days transit) and think that the 2-3 days is a guaranteed time frame where as it is actually only an average estimate.

good luck w/ it.

I once shipped my package to an international chick. Ended up with red bumps and a burning sensation when I pee.

Oh yeah, that whole pickle. They're striking at my bridge too. Some guy ran the line and hit three people the other day. :Q
