How to reset bios on Compaq R3240CA Laptop

I have a Compaq R3240CA laptop that was given to me to fix. The machine powers on and asks for a password (not a setup or bios) but a power on password. The customer forgot the password and has no idea how to get around this problem.
Can anyone help me out or know where I can look on the net? I am guessing that it is something to do with the bios and if can reset it then it should work.

If someone has some advice, please let me know

Did you try contacting Compaq for their advice? Resetting laptop BIOS passwords is often NOT trivial. Nowadays, some laptop manufacturers have made it near-impossible to reset the passwords. I've seen a couple of web sites on the topic, but I don't have the link at this moment. Start with Compaq: Their web site, their online support chat, their email support, or a phone call.

Based upon a quick UseNet and HP web site search, you'll likely have to return it to an HP repair shop. But you might get lucky and find that if you remove ALL of the batteries for ten minutes, it may reset itself.

Thanks. I wanted to avoid sending it back but that might be my only option to contact them and find out what I can do.
