How to report email abuse?

Hi,

How do I go about reporting someone who is using yahoo.com and hotmail.com email addresses to send SPAM, not in their own email addresses as sender, but making it look like it's coming from someone else's email address? I found out who is doing these, but I don't know who to contact so that I can have these accounts deleted. If you know for both Yahoo and Hotmail, that would be great. TIA.

Well first off, are you really sure you know whose sending the emails?
Spammers now have a way to spoof email address domains in their return addresses to make it look as though an excite, hotmail, aol, yahoo or whatever domain they wish to be in place of the real return address....so you may think you know whose sending the mail, but in reality its a spoofed address that ends up getting the wrong person in trouble.

Be sure before you lodge a complaint with any of these email services.
Otherwise it will be you left with egg on your face.

Well the thing is, I've had my email address for long time now, and I've been ignoring it whenever I was receiving SPAM emails that came from my "own email address". But recently, I've been receiving a lot of complaints from random people I don't know, asking me to stop sending them SPAM. I wanted to do something about this before I get in trouble (ie. banned account) myself, since I really need my email address that I have now. Maybe I should contact his ip instead? Can they spoof that too? (anonymizer?)

Yes. Are you sure you don't have some sort of virus?

Yes, I'm sure I don't have virus, since I update my antivirus software weekly, and I've never had a known virus.

This is what came back through ip lookup:

Search results for: ! NET-63-137-89-0-1

OrgName: I.S.E.I., INC
OrgID: ISEI
Address: 1306 Paddock Road, Suite E-2

Should I contact the isp?

Ohhh...I see what you mean, some spammer is using your email address as a mask for their spam.

Who's your email provider? If it's your ISP, might want to call them up and let them know what's going on. Most ISP's will request the full headers of a spam email before deleting an account for spamming (and they'll see it's not you doing it).

The IP in the email headers can't be faked, but anymore, the vast majority of spam is coming from overseas, from spam-friendly hosts, so it won't do you any good to complain. The only kind that I bother reporting are the "send $5 to each person on the list" ones, because those people are dumb enough to use their own host to spam.

Thanks MrBond for your input. If the IP in the email header can't be faked, then maybe I will report the ISP I posted above, and they might do something about it. It's in North Carolina, so it seems. Thanks.
