How to replace the pedestal on an office chair?

This seems impossible. I've tried hammering as they suggested. Any ideas?

Look for markings on the chair that say "made in China". If yes, the chair cannot be fixed.

I'm only half-joking. I really don't think you can replace those unless the chair initially cost $1200.

I went through this last year. What a PITA to take apart. I think I ended up using a 24" pipe wrench on the cylinder to turn it slightly then a 8 pound sledge hammer to pop the cylinder out of the base. I propped the base up on some landscaping blocks I had in the back yard, put a piece of oak 4x4 over the cylinder and WHAM! Took my neighbor & I nearly half an hour to get the sumbitch to come free. Replacement took only a couple of minutes.

Not impossible...just very difficult.

It's a press-fit. You have to get it started...then it should almost fall out.

(or at least that's what she said.)
