how to replace just the cpu fan (prescott)

i just got a panaflo L1A 80mm fan and i'd like to swap it with my current stock prescott fan. is this possible? do i remove the fan from the bracket or what? the panaflo is currently plugged into the motherboard system fan and for some reason it doesnt see the fan installed in the system fan pin. so it reads 0 rpm, but the fan still spins. does the panaflo not support rpm sensing?
