How to replace a corrupt XP file from XP CD?

I got an error at boot that said there was a problem with: \windows\system32\config\system. It said to use the XP CD to repair. But I don't want to do the whole repair process. How do I just replace the corrupt file?
Thanks.🙂

In this case you can't, the SYSTEM file is your system hive (registry). It doesn't exist on the cd, it's build as the system installs.

I don't think it is a file on the XP CD. I think it is file created by XP.

After telling someone who got this error that I never got it, I strangely got it on a couple of versions of XP yesterday, although not my main one. (No sign of a virus.) What worked, and is pretty easy, is to hit F8 as XP boots. At the menu choose "Last known good configuration."

Edit. I pressed F8 repeatedly instead of holding it down and it worked. Thanks a lot for the help.🙂

Thanks for the replies. I held down F8 during reboot three times in a row just now and windows just started like normal. Is there another way to do this? Thanks.

What you did works the best. There is only an instant when XP seems to accept the key input.

Try sfc /scannow at the command promt with Windows CD in drive bay.

Thanks. I'll do that too. My system seems okay, but I'm not sure yet. You know how it is with corrupt windows- you never know when it will crash.
