Hey all,
As I'm sure some of you know the Samsung HD204UI had a problem with bad firmware that lead to the disk creating unreadable block on the drive. I experienced some minor data corruption before I became aware of this - then I updated the firmware with a new version that is supposed to fix the issue.
The problem is - how do I clear those unreadable sectors? As far as I understand they should not be physically damaged from the firmware defect, so there must surely be some way of just clearing everything and recovering the unreadable areas. I've made backups of the data I care about and the disk is now ready for anything including destructive operations.
I have Samsungs EStools on hand, as well as a copy of spinrite (and I can probably get my hands on other tools like HDD regenerator if need be). I just want to ask for some help in terms of what sort of operations I should be running on the disk. Since its 2TB large it takes 5-6 hours to do most disk-wide operations, and I don't want to have to just guess my way forward and potentially waste days tying up my computer on futile efforts. I do know a little about how to use such tools, but I'm no expert on the inner workings of mechanical harddrives so I am unsure about exactly how I should proceed.
Any help would be appreciated. I am sure I'm not the first person who has had the need to repair an HD204UI like this given that there were a lot of drives affected by the firmware bug... Maybe if I'm real lucky on of you out there has gone through this scenario already?
Sincerely
-Stigma
