when I have to reboot my router, winxp tries to "acquire a network address" but will never do it unless I reboot. I click on the icon in my systray to get the "local area connection status". I click on repair and I get the following error:

windows could not finish repairing the problem because the following action cannot be completed: registering with DNS

uh, how do I fix this without rebooting?

You probably have a bad NIC that's having problems with DHCP.

If this is a desktop and it's always connected to the same router then a simple workaround is just setup your IP address and DNS manually on the computer (static IP).

If you had the desktop's NIC configured for a static IP and DNS then it wouldn't say "Aquiring network address". You only aquire an address if you're using DHCP.

You need to manually set the IP, DNS and Gateway for the network interface. You can find out what those settings are by right clicking on the network connection, clicking on "Status", click on the Support tab and then click on the "Details" button.
