How to repair a Klipsch 4.1 SUB.

Hi,
I would like to know if someone has already opened his Klipsch SUB.
Two weeks ago, my brother listened to The fast and the Furious on MY machine while having the SUB volume to HALF (I know he is crazy) AND the MAIN volume to half also. I was shocked when I came home. I could feel the floor shaking. So I went down, yelled at him and took my place back and disabled his account on win2k. ;):)
Then, after putting settings back to "default", (I never put main volume higher than 1/3), I realised that some strange sound was comming from the sub. Its like a little fast but annoying vibration :"grrrrrrrrrrrr". Its like if two parts were not well put together (like something loose) and the vibration makes that noise.

Is it safe to open Klipsch sub ? I won't brake anything just by oppening it right ?

Thanks
Thor

Good lord, that'd be loud.

Either way, I'd open it up - just make sure you unplug it, and don't mess with any of the amplipier components (capacitors can hold a charge even after they've been unplugged - trust me, it'll hurt).

I'm betting he somehow damaged the cone or the voice coil - but he could have also damaged the amplifier, which would probably be even worse.

Yeah Good Lord !
It was SO loud even the door closed !
When I opened the door, it was dark, I entered and stayed 20 seconds behind him and his friend. Then I opened the lights and they were soooo scared ! LOL.

Now, the cone is the part that actually makes the noise right ? Its like a sort or plastified paper ? A hole in it could make that noise I think. I'll open it this week-end to see...

Sure it is loud but still its not good if the sub blows at 1/2 volume.

I don't know why the speakers should have any problem. I have the Klipsch 2.1's, and I have turned up the sub and main volume to full before, just to feel how high the bass could go (but I had earplugs in :D--I'm not that crazy). I've never had a problem with them. You should see if you could return them. I always keep my sub at full volume (I like the thump), but main volume is only 1/4 to 1/3. As long as you didn't modify the speakers, 1/2 volume shouldn't do any damage at all. I'd take them back.

I would take them back, if you can.

He could of blown the sub. What kind of sound exactly. If its like a grumble when the base hits, and sounds like it is making that noise. (the sub not the case rattling) He probably blown the sub.

Hey I got an idea, record the sound. :) Then post a link to it so we can hear it.

I would not open it, give Klipsch a call and ask them, I have the 4.1's and I hope this is a single case incident.

Hey !
Could you try this little Mp3 ? Its from the movie Xman.
LINK
Put the sound volume to 1/3 or a little more while having the sub at normal settings.
Play, go NEAR the sub (15-20cm) and listen for an unusual vibration.
;)

Thanks !

you sure it isn't just static from line in oro soemthing you forgot to mute? mute all the inputs cept wav and see if that cuts out all noise. i've played the klipsch very hard and nothing ever has blown. i keep the speakers at 75% volume and control volume mostly from the pc:p

Nah, the noise comes after the third high peek in the music, where after some vibrating bass comes in.
The noise is a vibration IN the sub. If exagerated, its like if you had a piece of metal on a vibrating table.

OKay. I know from where the sound comes. It comes from the back of the SUB. The vibrations come exactly from the amplifier in the back. If I put my hand on the cover ( on the back) I can feel it. Is this normal ? Its like if some parts IN the ampli are vibrating and producing that noise. ;)

Nefrodite, how can u have the volume to 75 % ? If I set more than 60% I have a strong hiss sound.
The type of hiss that makes you realise how STRONG the sound will be if you hit the play key on winamp... ;)

i have the newer preamp, less hiss:p the original promedias did his a lot more, i'm not sure the hiss increased with volume though, it stayed constant which is why it still existed at zero volume:p i think you can buy the newer preamp separately:p
