How to remove video drivers ?

I've been running an EVGA graphics card and now want to install an ATI. What all do I need to do to remove the nvidia drivers before the install? I know I've read a how-to somewhere but I can't find it and remember it being a slightly involved process. TIA!

You'll need to REMOVE the drivers AND the DEVICE.

Do you have an NForce motherboard? If so, the process is slightly more complicated. Go to Control Panel/Add Remove Programs. Click NVidia. You'll get a clickable menu asking you what do you want to remove. Select "videocard drivers only." Click OK/Next.

It'll do it's thing and tell you to reboot. Click no.

Right click My Computer. Click manage. Click Device Manager. Click Display Adapters. Right click on the videocard and select Remove.

Shut down. Remove Nvidia card, install ATI card. Reboot. When the Found New Hardware wizard comes up, click cancel. Run the ATI driver pack. 🙂

If you DON'T have an NVidia motherboard, follow the directions in Paragraph 1 above anyway. The only option you should see is Video drivers.

Hope this helps.

Hi, You don't usually have to remove the driver first. You can remove it later from SAFE MODE, Device Manager along with all the other left over drivers that you no longer use. Sure wont hurt to remove it first though. Luck, Jim

All of the above  You usually start with Control Panel, ADD/Remove Software, and then remove the nVidia drivers and anything else that goes with it. Then you reboot - and then you use the cleaner. (I do that manually.) Then run the ATI Catalyst software - driver and CC. The whole thing usually takes about 3-4 reboots to finish.

yup. Just make sure you don't accidentally clean out the chipset drivers if you've got an nV chipset...did that on my wife's machine, pain in the butt to get them back on.

Thanks for the help! I had no problems following everyone's advice and the 6800GS for X1900XT swap went smoothly. The kids love the improved video quality. Now I just need to learn al the settings in Catalyst. The fun never ends!
