How to remove the face plate from an HP Pavilion case

My friend has an HP Pavilion 8965. It has two optical drives (DVD-ROM and CD-RW). The CD-RW is dead and I want to replace it for him, but I cannot get the front face off of this beast cleanly. Anybody know the secret handshake?

The drive doesn't have room to come out the back. The top cover looks like it would slide backwards, perhaps making a front release visible, but I'm stuck and don't want to break it.

Thanks.

If you can remove both side panels that should expose the mounting mechanism for the bezel. On one of their older cases (2 years ago... maybe 3) there were I believe 6 mounting points, 3 on each side. They shoud be either flat with a triangular lip to them or circular... you will need to remove fasteners on either side simultaneously or it won't work. Of course you could always try simply removing the Power Supply and sliding the optical drive out the back if my information is useless.

Well, I had tried those 6 locking tabs down the sides. The bottom and middle came free, but something is still holding the top even when the tabs are clear. That's what makes me think I need to remove the top plastic cover.

I may have to do the power supply if nothing else but it is a tight, tight fit. While I have to give HP kudos for a pretty good set of features, I've seen SFF cases with better clearances. 🙂

Thanks.

Those can be a beatch 'til you find the trick. There is a funny latch on or near the sides of the drive cage - you loosen a screw and then you can unlock the latch. Once you loosen those, the whole shebang slides out thru the front. And I think there is another screw or two in there that needs to be removed as well before it will slide out.
. You should be able to find a diagram or pix if you Google on- HP Pavilion drive cage removal -or similar. It's been several years since I've messed with one and I don't remember as well as I once could.

if thisis how the case looks like, just pop open the cd storage cover. towards the front, there should be a little hole under the cover. take a pen and stab the hole which should release the front fascia.

edit: i have a very similar hp case and if you need help taking the front fascia out, i can take pictures for you.

How about the guy takes pictures of the case with side panels off? That way we can ID the darn thing and give him some more directed pointers.

dc5, that is the case design. I'll try the "little hole" next time I see the computer. (He has to bring it to work since we're in the same office) Thanks. I was sure there was a "secret button."
