Hi,

I just brought a ThermalTake volcano 7+ so as to bring my 2.0A @2.667 temp down.

Problem statement: How to remove the retail hsf?
Contraints : *this may sound stupid* my mb is screwed onto the chasis and CANNOT BE REMOVED ANYMORE. the screw is struck!!

is there anymore hsf out there that make use of same type of locking mechanism that retail hsf use??
and how the remove the hsf ?

Thanks.

I believe this is the heatsink on your cpu? In the front there is a small slot on the clip where a flathead screwdriver fits. Try several till you get one that fits it securely so it doesn't slip and hit the mobo. You let it slip and hit the mobo, that may kill it.

Using the good-fitting flathead screwdriver inserted into that slot, press down on the clip and push it away from the motherboard catch. Then pull the heatsink up and away from the rear catch. You don't need to remove your motherboard but depending how close your ram is you might have to remove it so you have better leverage.

Then use ispropyl alchohol to remove that amd goop on the heatsink and the cpu. I've never had a retail heatsink so it they used a thermal pad you may have to gently scrap it off with something like a credit card and using nail polish remover if the alchohol doesn't work.

Then use these instructions to apply new thermal compound. 😉
