How to remove Radeon 8500 heatsink?

I'd like to replace my Radeon 8500's noisy heatsink/fan with a passive copper heatsink. I've got an undervolted slot cooler adjacent to it, so I figure it will probably get enough airflow even without its own fan. I began removing the 8500's fan, but realized that I can't remove the heatsink itself. Someone please advise?

Also.... is there a reasonably simple way to make a slot cooler act as an intake rather than an exhaust? I've got more exhausts than intakes right now, and besides it just seems more appropriate to have cool the video card with cool outside air (from at least 6 inches beneath the next exhaust) rather than exhausting hot air across it. The alternative is to remove my blowhole fan.... right now I'm getting way to much dust in the case since my exhausts move so many more CFM's than my intakes.

well i don't know exactly how to reverse it, but i know with most motors if you reverse the positive/negative connections it will reverse direction.

I heard once about putting your card in the freezer once. If you do try this make sure you dont get any frost on your card.

What I did to remove my geforce 2 heatsink was to play 3dmark for 15 minutes. This makes everything nice and hot. THen I quickly turned off my pc pulled the power plug and took out my vid card. I then used a screw driver to get the heatsink off. I put the screw driver between the core and the heatsink then twisted. This method will also work with a hair dryer. Just be careful though because a hair dryer is very hot and should not be used for too long on your card.

Place a plastic credit card, the one you have the highest balance on, close under the edge of the fan/heatsink , next get a flat blade screw driver and place between the CC and the heatsink now with a little twist the heatsink /fan will pop off. The purpose of the CC is to protect the board and not disconnect any of the internal wires.

I have removed my Radeon heatsink this way. I also ran the video card hard right before to get it hot.

Good luck and just take your time and all will go well.

Either get the card hot or cold (put the card in a ziplock bag and put it in the freezer for a couple mins) and use a screwdriver and a cc to pop off the heatsink. Don't reverse the connections to the fan, fans are designed to push air through one direction. Best way to reverse it is to flip the fan itself.

Method for removing epoxied HSFs.
1. Remove the fan.
2. Get a can of compressed air.
3. Spray the contents upside down onto the heatsink for at least 5 secs.
4. It should be frozen, so get a thin plastic card.
5. Put the card between the GPU and the HS.
6. Get a thin flat screwdriver.
7. Put the screwdriver between the card and the HS.
8. Twist the screwdriver.
9. If it does not come off easily, try doing it on each corner.
10. Clean up with 70 or 91% alcohol. If you need something stronger, acetone or xylene will do. Then clean up again with alcohol.

Thanks everyone. I've got some freeze spray that oughtta do the trick nicely. I'll let you know how it works out 🙂
