So my parents bought a PowerSpec system 4 years ago for $350 but ended up sucking with the hard drive breaking down twice. I recently took apart the system and kept some old parts. The old CPU is a Intel Celeron 433mhz with a retail heat sink. Unfortunately The heat sink won't come off. Does anybody know how I would go about removing it?

Also anybody have any ideas as to what I could do with it? The MB sucks as well...its a Elitegroup P6SET-ML and all I recognize is the ECS and SIS chip. It seems like a waste to throw any of this away.

You have to pry the CPU away from the heatsink with a crowbar.

But don't use a crowbar for real. The reason it's stuck to the HSF is because Intel decided to use crappy thermal tape or phase change stuff that hardens really really hard after a year of use. I changed a friend's Celeron stock heatsink and it was stuck to the HSF just like yours was. But his was an 333mhz CPU. Well I put some AS3 and a Stock AMD Duron 1.2Ghz HSF and it's running fine now.

How about this: Use a Q-Tip, soaked with rubbing alcohol or Goo Gone between where the cpu and hsf are joined. This will prolly loosen it up enough to pull or twist it off by hand :)

EDIT: If you would like to sell those parts (or the whole system) please LMK a price. Looking for something cheap :D

I find a credit card works good for removing stuck heat sinks. Just wiggle it in between the hsf and the cpu, should pop it right off.
