How to remove o.s. selection on startup?

Hi, I just reformatted a friend's hp inspiron laptop and installed windows xp on it. The laptop had an unlicensed copy of windows prior to reformatting it. After installing windows the o.s. selection appeared on startup asking what o.s. to choose but the choices are both windows xp professional. Whenever I choose the second option an error occurs saying no operating system installed (something like that). This is the first time i have encountered this.

I tried to google it and found one solution but haven't tried it cause I don't have the laptop yet but is opening "boot.ini" and removing a certain line will solve the problem and remove the o.s. selection?
