I am reinstalling windows 98 on a friend's machine. I was not aware that there was a virus scan installed.

We deltreed c:\windows\

Then when we tried to install 98/millenium we got a message saying that windows install could not continue if there was a virus scan installed.

I cleared the references to the mcaffe program in autoexec.bat and config.sys, but it still doesnt work. Any one know what else I can do to get rid of the virus scan? Right now the computer is without an operating system and we would prefer not to reformat if possible.

Please respond ASAP, thank ya

This is a tough one - nobody else has tried it either! Have you tried booting up from a floppy? You might be able to bypass any McAfee files that way.

Disable all antivirus programs running on your computer.
If these utilities are left running during Setup, your
computer may stop responding.

NOTE: Some computers have antivirus capabilities built
into the system. If this option is left enabled in
BIOS/CMOS settings, you may receive a warning about
"virus-like activity" or "Master Boot Record" changes.
You must allow these changes to take place for Setup
to complete successfully. For more information, see
your antivirus software documentation.

Run ScanDisk to check and fix any problems with your
hard disk(s).

Close all running programs. This includes disabling
any screen savers, Advanced Power Management settings,
and other programs that may cause Setup to stop
responding. See "Performing a Clean Boot" for more
information.

This is off the WINME Upgrade CD.....for more info read the setup text file found in the Win9X folder.
