how to remove local area connection tray icon?

I can't get rid of it. Clicked always hide. It always comes back. Unchecked both boxes in LAC properties general notify section. Each time I shut off the one computer I'm networked to the "network cable unplugged" icon pops up. It's a royal pain in the arse. Is there any registry fix that you know of to terminate the tray ico? I mean kill it dead once and for all? Thanks.

my apologies. XP Pro on the offending host and XPMCE on the one connected machine that i use intermittently.
