the fan on my gigabyte radeon 9800 pro died on me and i need to replace it. off course finding a fan for that HS is next to impossible
so i'm gonna buy an arctic cooler that works on the 9800.... im the meantime how do i get the HS of the vga card?
I tried googling this but didnt get any 'convincing' solutions.... consensus seems to be freezing the card before attempting to pry the heatsink off.
any good guides for this sort of a thing?

the card is pretty simlilar to the standard ati 9800 pros, just has a whaccky heatsink. so a general radeon 9700/9800 guide would do

TIA

run a graphic intensive app for about 10 minutes (3dmark, hl2, etc.). now the glue or thermal paste is warm and should come off easier.

Use a hair dryer to heat it up, then twist and remove it. Arctic Cooler NV Silencer's instruction also mention to use a hair dryer.

I used a hair dryer for about 10 minutes on my 9700 pro to get it off. It was still on there pretty good even after heating it up but it came off. Pay attention to what JBL said and twist, don't pull.

What do you use to get the remaining cement-like crap off the GPU so it is clean and ready for good contact with whatever you're applying to it?

I like to heat it up some more and scrape it off with a credit card or some other plastic thing. Then I'd use rubbing alcohol to finish it off.

OK, it came off a whole easier that I thought. It was attached with some plastic spring loaded grappling hook like thingies.... and it was not glued

Sticking with tradition I got thermal paste all over the chip and now.. ask the question how exactly do u use the rubbing alcohol to get excess gunk off?

how much do you use? and waht do you use to dab it with? I've tried (OK don't kill me) q-tips but that just makes a bigger mess as it leaves a bunch of lint behind.

Thanks for the info guys!

You can use coffee filters or lens cleaning cloth as they are lint-free.

Thanks will use cofee filters... awesome!!

Now is there an app that can give me the temps of my card? It's an Radeon 9800 Pro by Gigabyte. I don't want to install the junk from gigabyte 'cos it's just a bloated POS.

ATI Tool or ATI Tray Tools. I suggest ATI Tray tools.

Seconded. No temp sensor on the 9800 Pro. The XT has one, but not the Pro. You're gonna have to get in there with a thermometer and do it the old fashioned way.
